Spring was wet and cold, which delayed budburst, meaning slower shoot growth. Spring rainfall was higher than average, meaning there was higher disease pressure, but it also meant irrigation was kept to a minimum, if any. Summer was respectfully mild, resulting in a later harvest. This combination was perfect for slow ripening, allowing flavour development while limiting sugar accumulation.
